October finally comes, and so the playoffs too. After the last game from the regular season ended on Sunday, October 3, the MLB Wild Card will begin this Tuesday, 5, with the American League game and the National League on the day after that.
The four teams to play are Los Angeles Dodgers (4), St. Louis Cardinals (5), Boston Red Sox (4), and New York Yankees (5). Despite the 2020 season, with fewer games, this year was the first opportunity, since 2017, that two franchises from the same division went to the playoffs.
In 2017 was the time for Arizona D-backs and Colorado Rockies from the West National League.
But until that, most of the franchises had a difficult week to clinch a spot for the postseason. Some of them secured their place only on the last day. Emphasis for Boston that will have the opportunity to play the challenge at home.
Of the four teams which will play the MLB Wild Card, only one, the St. Louis Cardinals, lose the last match from the regular season. Take a look below.
- Red Sox 7 @ 5 Nationals
- Rays 0 @ 1 Yankees
- Brewers 3 @ 10 Dodgers
- Cubs 3 @ 2 Cardinals
Los Angeles Dodgers was the second-best team from all the league this season but has the bad luck to belong to the West division – the same from San Francisco Giants, which finished in the first place, with 107 wins.
Only one win separated both teams, and now the Dodgers will have to play the Wild Card. With 106 wins and 56 losses (654 winning percentage) and seven streak win, they finish the regular season with 83 runs scored – NL record and 561 runs against – best defense from the league. Now they will try to advance, to repeat 2020, with the World Series title.
Despite a 17 win streak this season (franchise record), St. Louis Cardinals won’t have an easy mission against LA. They finished the season with 90 wins and 72 losses, 706 runs scored, and 672 against. The streak made the Cardinals increase their numbers and go to the Wild Card.
Like we said before, here it’s a match between two teams from the East AL. Boston and New York finished with 92 wins and 70 losses (568 winning percentage) with 829 runs scored and 749 against for the Red Sox, and 711 runs scored and 669 against for the Yankees. Duo to three streak wins, Boston overcame NY and will have the advantage to play at home.
