Vitoria Setubal vs Tondela for the Portuguese Primeira Liga championship match on Monday at Bonfim Stadium.
Vitória de Setubal’s team comes to their second official meeting this new season, having already played in the 1st phase of the League Cup (and having beaten Moreirense’s home team, 1-0, with an Artur Jorge’s goal, thus advancing to the next stage).
In what should be another complicated season for the Setubalense team, taking into account the financial and economic problems affecting the sadinos, which still maintain the coaching structure of last season, headed by Sandro Mendes.
Still, I think one can only hope for a maintenance fight, which the team should achieve if it stays the way it was last season.
Already Tondela enters this matchday 1 of the Portuguese Premier League championship, having started their new season in the worst way, being defeated (and eliminated) by Penafiel in the first phase of the League Cup.
Thus prolonging the bad moment after a pre-season time almost without any added victory. Following Pepa’s departure, the team will be coached this season by Spanish coach Natxo González.
In what may or may not be a season of affirmation for both the Vitoria de Setubal team and the Tondela formation, this is after very inconsistent seasons over the last few years where these teams were not always able to reach their goal of maintenance with ease (both sides only on the last few days ensured permanence).
It is almost inevitable, in my view at least, that they will be two rival teams in the maintenance fight, which tend to excel in defensive solidity and tactical rigidity, leads me to predict here a meeting with few goals scored and few scoring opportunities created by both sides.
