Tuesday’s matches brought to a close the group stage of UEFA qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup? The first ten qualifiers from the Old Continent for the tournament in Qatar have been determined. In the same way, it was also decided which teams would contest the World Cup playoff in Europe. Ten teams have qualified for the playoffs, with another two teams still in contention for League qualification.

Among the top teams that will dispute the playoff for the World Cup are Portugal and the defending champion of the European Championship, Italy (which, even without a guaranteed spot yet, should remain among the top candidates for the title, in Bet365). Both teams were disappointed in qualifying so far and lost the opportunity to go straight to the World Cup in Qatar. Besides the duo, other interesting groups are still fighting for a place in the main football tournament in the World. Special mention goes to Poland, Sweden and Wales.

World Cup playoff headliners

The UEFA World Cup playoff will be played on a different basis than in previous editions. This time, the 12 teams in contention for a place at the World Cup will be divided into three groups of four teams each. The final will be played in six matches in a single game as if they were semi-finals. Whoever comes out on top in these clashes will go through to three decider games, determining Qatar’s qualifiers.

For the semi-finals, six countries are seeded. The two biggest favorites for the remaining places, Italy and Portugal, are among these teams. That is, they cannot face each other, at least not in the first duel. Besides them, Scotland, Russia, Sweden, and Wales will also be in pot 1 of the World Cup playoff draw. The advantage for these six teams is that they can play at home in the first leg.

Pot 2: Who could spring a surprise?

Six other teams already know that they will not play at home in the UEFA World Cup playoff semi-finals. For example, Austria and the Czech Republic, who remain in contention for a place at the 2022 finals thanks to their Nations League results, are in this group. Turkey, Poland, North Macedonia, and Ukraine are among the teams from the qualifying groups in pot 2.

Of these six teams not in the top six, Poland appears to have the best chance of springing a surprise. The European country has the World’s best player in the squad, Robert Lewandowski, and counts on the Bayern Munich striker’s goalscoring insight to help them reach the World Cup. However, Turkey and Ukraine, in particular, cannot be ruled out either.

Possible scenarios in this playoff

With this new format, we could have giant clashes from the semi-final of this World Cup playoff. Both Italy and Portugal, for example, could face Poland immediately. In a hypothetical duel between the Portuguese and the Polish, we would meet the last best players in the world, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lewandowski. In the same way, as there are no offsides for the final, Fernando Santos’ team could face the Italians in a clash of the two most recent Euro champions.

Similarly, the two biggest favorites in the UEFA World Cup playoffs may face each other. The Italians could face Austria and Ukraine, while the Portuguese could face Macedonia and the Czech Republic. The only match that cannot be played at any stage is the Ukraine-Russia encounter due to political issues involving the two countries.
