Hellas Verona vs Cittadella, Sunday’s match for the second leg of the Italian Series B Promotion Playoff.
Verona entered the final play-off as favourites to secure their place in the Italian Series A, now hosting Cittadella at home in the second leg, and are hopeful to prove they are really favourites despite being at a disadvantage, due to the defeat suffered in the first match.
I believe that Verona can now, in front of their fans, change the course of the situation, and certainly will have a better approach in this game.
Club officials wanted to be only for one year in Italy’s second division, but the defeat on Thursday caused the alarms to sound, and will have a difficult mission to meet in this match at the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi.
What makes it curious is that Verona wasn’t at all dominated in the first game, but the reality is that they had a very complicated result to overcome.
Verona thrashed Cittadella 4-0 when the teams played in the first round of the season and it is this performance that the Gialloblu intend to do in this match.
Cittadella finished in eighth place in Series B, but with a reduction of Palermo points, managed to stay in seventh place in the standings.
Since starting the playoffs, Cittadella has made very reasonable displays, and they intend to continue with that record, and reach the Series A, which has never been achieved in its almost fifty years of history.
It would be a huge feat for the club to rise to Series A, and now they have a great opportunity as they are in the “pole position” after a 2-0 win in the opening game.
Needless to say, Cittadella has lost only once in their last eight games, which is a good leverage for this decisive confrontation.
After the victory in the first game, Cittadella took a huge step towards winning their first title, with striker Davide Diaw to be the hero.
Now Roberto Venturato’s men want to make history and earn a place in the Italian elite, despite having seventh place in the season finale in Series B.
I believe that Verona playing at home and in front of their audience will capitalize on this advantage of playing in their stadium. I’ll bet on a home win in this Sunday game.
