France vs USA, Friday’s match for the Quarter-finals of the Women’s World Cup at the Parc des Princes in Paris, France.
The French gave their fans a scare in the round of 16. In front of the Brazilian team, they didn’t go further than a 1-1 draw in regular time. They even went ahead, with a goal scored by Valerie Guavin within seven minutes of the second half. However, they suffered the equalizer in the 19th minute with a goal by Thais and escaped the elimination thanks to a missed chance by the Canarinho team in the final minutes of the match.
The survival was only assured with the victory by 1 to 0 in the extra time. The final score came with Amandine Henry’s goal, two minutes from the final of the extra time. It ended up being a relief for a presentation considered short of the technical quality of the team.
The regular time draw interrupted a series of victories that reached eight successes, including the first three matches of the Women’s World Cup and five friendlies preparatory to the confrontation.
The Americans also had a little more work than expected to confirm their favoritism against Spain in the round of 16 but did not go on overtime. They settled the situation in regular time by scoring 2 to 1.
Their two goals were scored in penalty kicks made by Megan Rapinoe. The first to the seven minutes of the first time and the second to the 30 minutes of the last half. The initial advantage was short-lived, as Jennifer Hermoso matched the score two minutes later.
However, the United States they took over on the second chance, they did not make room for the reaction of the Spanish team, who scored their only kick on goal throughout the match in the five attempts they were allowed to complete by their rivals.
With the victory, the United States extended its undefeated series to 13 matches (11 successes and two draws), and in the last nine matches the team left the field as the winner.
In the last 43 matches, involving official and friendly competitions, the United States team suffered only one defeat, just for France. In this block of games, there were five draws, one of them also against the French, which shows that the best national team of women’s football has difficulties when facing this opponent, who now counts on the factor home as complicating. Even so, the prediction in the United States against the solidity of their performance is the best guess for the duel of Friday for the quarterfinals of the World Cup of France Women’s Soccer 2019.
