Denmark vs Georgia, Monday’s match for the qualifying round, Group D, for the EURO 2020 Qualifiers, in the Parken Stadium, Copenhagen.
A 1-1 draw with the Republic of Ireland on Friday continued Denmark’s difficult start to the qualifying campaign. The hosts made an unbeaten start to the campaign as they sought to keep up with the impressive displays at the World Cup last summer. While the Danes already have a playoff place for the tournament, they can continue that success in this qualifying phase.
Denmark has to reminisce about their performance as they should have won Friday’s clash with the Irish. They took the lead in the 76th minute, with Ireland scoring five minutes into the game to secure a point. That left Denmark with only two points in their first two clashes, making this a game with the Georgians that should be victorious for the hosts.
Georgia is rising in European football after finishing first in the Nations League group at the end of last year. They are now guaranteed a playoff for the Euro. Georgia are used to getting out of contention for the top of the group at the start, but this time they qualified for the qualifiers after winning five of their six games in the Nations League, a clear increase in confidence.
The visitors averaged two goals per game in that group as they prepared for this game away by beating Gibraltar 3-0. This put them above Denmark in the group, while Georgia will aim to cause problems for the larger nations. That’s what they did in qualifying for the World Cup, taking points with Wales and Austria while holding the Republic of Ireland for a 1-1 draw.
The visitors scored in three of the last four trips away in the World Cup qualifiers while participating in the Nations League. However, Denmark has seen both teams score in the last three games, having suffered two defeats against Kosovo and three against Switzerland.
However, Denmark is a much better team, and playing at home must be a favorite. They tied with Ireland at home, but in a game where they were better. Ireland won in their home against this Georgia team by 1-0. It will be a difficult game, but it should give victory to Denmark.
