Cruzeiro vs Fluminense, Wednesday’s match for the second leg of the round of sixteen of the Brazilian Cup.
Outside the four lines Cruzeiro is plunged into a gigantic administrative crisis with accusations of misuse of the club’s resources to pay officials. The subject is under investigation and although it does not present direct influence in the results certainly cannot be isolated from the day to day operations.
In the pitch, the crisis is one of performance and results. In the performance aspect, it was even slightly softened in the 1-1 draw, held on Sunday, June 2, against São Paulo, in Pacaembu, for the seventh round of the Brazilian Series A 2019 Championship. The Raposa came out from a disadvantage, came to the draw and was better than the tricolor during most of the confrontation.
The result, however, was not as expected. The team followed without being able to win away from home in Brasileirão. With seven points it occupies the fifteenth position in the classification table. They stopped, at least, from having the worst defense of the tournament.
With 14 goals conceded, they were overcome, in that negative ranking, precisely by Fluminense, who with 15 balls in the net in seven games passed to be the worst defensive system of Series A when being beaten by Athletico Paranaense by 3 to 0.
Coach Mano Menezes clung to the good performance to call the fans to support the team despite the results below the expectation.
When beaten by the Hurricane, Fluminense was parked with six points to fall to sixteenth place in the table of classification of the Brasileirão. It is at the edge of the relegation zone. The score is the same as the CSA, seventeenth place and first team in the falling down region. The tricolor takes advantage of the number of wins, which is the first tiebreaker.
The pressure on the coach Fernando Diniz was only relieved thanks to the classification for the round of sixteen of the South America Cup. Even so, they were defeated. After beating Atlético Nacional, from Colombia, by 4-1, the tricolor was beaten last Wednesday, May 29, by 1-0 in Medellin.
Having a classic with Flamengo ahead in the next round of the Brasileirão, the elimination before the Cruzeiro can increase the turbulence.
The signs of recovery given by Cruzeiro in the match against São Paulo and the fall trajectory of Fluminense in their last matches make the prognostic lean towards the success of the miners as the best option for the meeting of Wednesday’s match for the second leg of the round of sixteen of the Brazilian Cup.
