Cruzeiro vs Chapecoense, Sunday’s match for the sixth round of the Brazilian Serie A Championship.
The “Raposa” (Fox) doesn’t leave the field celebrating a success for as long as four matches now. There were three defeats and a draw in that period. This list involves three competitions.
The first failure was in the Libertadores. At home, Cruzeiro took 2 to 1 from Emelec, from Ecuador, losing 100% in the tournament in the last round of the first phase of the competition. They had already secured the qualification for the round of 16. They’ll face River Plate in July.
In the Copa do Brasil, they were 1-1 back against Fluminense, in Maracanã, in a clash in which they only had a single shot on goal in 90 minutes and suffered 20 attempts on their own goal. At least they will have the right to fight for survival in the quarterfinals at home in a showdown scheduled for June 5.
The other two matches in this negative series were for the Brasileirão and had disastrous results. The first, in Porto Alegre, ended with Internacional winning by 3 to 1.
The most recent was also against Fluminense. This time, Cruzeiro had more goals, however did not count on the lack of aim of the tricolor, which they thrashed by 4 to 1.
Staying with six points in Serie A of the Brasileirão, Cruzeiro fell to 15th position, showing weakness in the sector that is considered the “girl-of-the-eyes” of its coach, Mano Menezes.
His defense, with 11 goals conceded, is the most leaked of the tournament, next to that of Vasco, occupying the last place of the tournament.
Chapecoense’s situation is even worse. Dedicated exclusively to the competition of the Brazilian Championship, once it has been eliminated from the South American Cup and the Brazilian Cup, the team has not been able to present evolution even taking the extra time to train.
On Sunday, May 19, they were beaten at home when facing Fortaleza by 3 to 1, a team considered a direct rival in the fight against relegation reaching four consecutive games without a win.
With only four points, they occupy the sixteenth position, the first outside the region for remaining. A much better qualified team and at home, Cruzeiro has the prognostic of victory against Chapecoense as the best guessing option for Sunday’s match for the sixth round of the Brazilian Serie A Championship.
