Bundesliga clubs, at least in recent years, know that they are unlikely to be able to prevent the season-ending with Bayern Munich’s title. The Bavarians have won the last nine editions of the German league and have dominated the local football scene. Despite this, there is no shortage of competition in the Bundesliga. There are fights for places in European competitions, and of course, to escape relegation. That is, excitement is not lacking.
With this in mind, we, from Betarena, have prepared a list that separates the Bundesliga clubs into three different levels. The first is related to the teams that will fight for a place in European competitions, be it the Champions League, Europa League, or the Conference League. The second level refers to the teams which are expected to be in the middle of the table. In other words, they are not likely to be in the top half of the table, but they should not have any scares either. Finally, those teams are trying to avoid relegation. Check out which group each team is in and start building your power ranking!
Clubs fighting for European competition
Starting our separation of Bundesliga clubs by different levels, let’s talk about those who will fight for places in European competitions. We create, of course, with Bayern Munich, who can almost be considered the only title contenders. The Bavarians, for example, have odds on Bet365 at 1.11 to take the cup of the German league. In other words, a place in the Champions League is already practically guaranteed for the team.
Borussia Dortmund is another team that is also unlikely to be out of the next edition of the biggest club tournament in the world. Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen, RB Leipzig, and Wolfsburg are expected to battle it out for the other two remaining Champions League spots. Consequently, whoever loses that battle will take the one remaining spot in the Europa League via the Bundesliga.
That leaves, finally, the battle for a place in the Conference League, UEFA’s new competition. Three Bundesliga clubs have their sights set on it. A second qualifying spot could be available should one of the top six teams win the German Cup. Borussia Monchengladbach, Union Berlin, and Mainz should be one of the teams to take that qualification.?
The luxury supporting cast for another Bundesliga season
On the other hand, five Bundesliga clubs are likely to be mere supporting players this season. Without much chance of qualifying for a European tournament in 2022/2023, just as they should not be fighting to avoid the drop, these teams should be in the middle of the table. Opening this group, we have three teams that have already won, including essential points at the beginning of the championship. Freiburg, Cologne, and Hoffenheim have made a good start and have established themselves in this second tier of football in the country.
Completing this group are two clubs who have not had such a positive start to the season but are expected to improve for the competition. Both Hertha Berlin and Eintracht Frankfurt have a squad with the quality to do more than they have done in these first few rounds. Therefore, they should stabilize in the middle of the table and finish the Bundesliga without big scares or relegation risks.
Those who must fight to stay in Bundesliga
The fight against relegation in the Bundesliga is another race that promises plenty of excitement. Five teams are the protagonists of this fight, which will take two clubs to the second division of German football. The primary candidates, inclusive, have just ignited from the second level of the national league. Bochum and Greuther Furth emerge as the most likely to be in the bottom two positions in the standings.
However, they are far from the only relegation candidates. Stuttgart, Augsburg, and Arminia Bielefeld are three other Bundesliga clubs that could end up being relegated. In addition to the two teams that will go directly to the second division, there is still a place for a playoff against the third-placed team in Bundesliga 2. That is, only two of these five teams will escape this fight with some respite.
