Apollon Limassol vs Austria Wien for the Europa League qualification match on Thursday at GSP Stadium.
The Cypriots immediately started the qualifying process in their first qualifying match against the Austrians. 14 minutes into the game, they were awarded a penalty, which was duly converted.
Although the hosts drew level later, with another penalty scored in the game, Limassol once again took the lead, finishing victorious with a 1-2 score.
At the moment, the job against Austrian visitors is to score two goals away from home, against a team that beat them at home, and also without conceding a goal to turn the tie or concede one to go into extra time. Given its present form and the shortcomings of its defence, I do not think they are capable of such a feat.
Limassol are confident of maintaining their lead in the aggregate 1-2 scorecard and know that if they score a goal, they can quickly secure the tie for their side and move on to the next round.
The task may be a bit much to handle considering that they can’t just hold the fort in the back. At one point or another, visitors will have to go forward looking for goals to change the game, and that will be the tip to take advantage of them to play counterattack and score goals.
Besides, Austria Vienna has lost three of their last four matches and conceded two or more goals in all three games. On the other hand, Apollon has won four of their previous five games in all competitions, scoring two or more goals, and have put the ball in the nets three times or more in their last two home games.
As things stand, I clearly hope the home team will be the favourite to win the match.
